ROOM 56

Room 56, end of hall, dead of night.
New moon waxing while you appeared to be waning.
Emmanuel it said on the sign,
Which everyone knows means God with us.
But where were you?
Nine decades of time demanding rest
Now for body tired, spirit exhausted.
Missing you already, your loved ones stood,
Each struggling with private hopes and needs.
Holding hands with you, as well as the unknown,
Made night long and memories vivid.
One more chance, please, to say hello,
To say good-bye if necessary, to say
Something which says it all.
If this be one more chance,
Or one of many,
It is enough.
I love You is what we all came to tell you
In Room 56, at the end of the hall,
In the dead of night.
